ALDS 3604 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Autism Spectrum, Inferior Frontal Gyrus, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
Review of dsm5 definitions of autism spectrum disorders. Understanding basic underlying genetics & current understanding of neuroanatomical & neurophysiological basis for asds. Review of current data pertaining diagnosis of asd including psycholinguistic models & neuroimaging data. Persistent deficits in social communication across variety of contexts (reciprocity, nonverbal communication, development/maintenance of social relationships (severity must be specified)) Restricted, repetitive behaviours & sensory concerns (severity must be specified) Symptoms occur during early development (but may only become apparent as social demands increase) Deficits aren"t better explained by intellectual disability. Required for social communication criteria & restricted, repetitive behaviours criteria. Additionally, diagnosis needs to specify with/without: intellectual disability, language impairment, any associated neurodevelopmental, mental or behavioural disorders, catatonia (bordering neurotic & psychotic problem) Persistent difficulties with social use of verbal & nonverbal communication (e. g. general pragmatic functions, awareness of needs of communication partner, social context, turn- taking, repair, inferences, etc. ) Onset in early development but may become apparent only when social demands increase.
