Key debate: the removal of high-quality industrial design. Key concern: how to balance type and individuality. This debate and concern would preoccupy the deutsche werkbund and coninue shape the formaion of the bauhaus in 1919. Germans reacted against the french revoluion-became romanic. Werkbund : an associaion of architects, cratspeople, business men and industrialists formed to improve industrial design. Central aim: to create links between cratsmen-arisans and industrial manufactures and thus to hamize industrial processes. Goal: the arriage of art and industry. German art reformers seeking an aestheic transformaion of daily life ied to a beneicial alliance with industry. Muthesius argues for typiicaion vs. van de velde"s kunstwollen (will to form) Tpiicaion-uniform making of an object that also has an aestheic quality. Expressionism-glass brings a new era- paul scheerbart: the cathedral as a metaphor, cathedral of the future. Johannes iten led preliminary course: basically irst year studio.
