Mammals: eutherians (placental mammals: most mammals fit in this group, contains many orders of mammals. Primates have: forward facing eyes, flat nails, hands that can grasp objects, complex social behaviour (but not exclusive to primates, a relatively large brain compared to body size. Shared derived characteristics include: upright posture and bipedal locomotion. Larger brains capable of language, symbolic thought, artistic expression, manufacture and use of tools: reduced jawbones and jaw muscles, shorter digestive tract, the species homo sapiens (modern humans) is about 200 000 years old. Those that stayed gave rise to sapiens, while those that migrated gave rise to neanderthals: neanderthals lived in europe and the near east from 350 000 to 28 000 years ago.
