Extremely flat for crawling under feathers which is why they are called flat flies: clams are parasites but not in the adult stage. The larval form is an ectoparasite with teeth like prejections on the shell which they snap shut. Attach to fish gills and fins, and feed on the blood. Adult clams have a modified mantle that looks like a little fish to lure in a big fish. When a shadow passes over it, the adult clam shoots the baby clams up at the fish: ectoparasite adaptations: Haller"s organ for detecting carbon dioxide to track down a host.
