Ingestion: digestion, break things down to chemicals, slugs and snails have digestive enzymes. Caterpillars don"t digest food because they don"t have these enzymes, so they"re constantly eating. Symbiotic relationship between moose and bacteria both digestion benefit. Hares, rabbits have caeca sac on the intestine for further digestion: eat their droppings coprophagy. The longer the intestines, the greater surface area, more to digest food. Some birds only eat fruit, don"t get food source from bugs: ex. Can swallow berries because they have large mouths. Get food through quickly because they have short intestines. Only want nutrients from pulp, spit out the seeds. Seed predators certain animals want the seed, not the pulp. Tiny bills used for tiny seeds: ex. Goldfinches: certain finches specialize in getting seeds out of cones, ex. Seed specialists only get certain seeds out from certain places. Mfos (mixed function oxidases) enzymes that digest food in some animals. Specialists have a very specific food source.
