BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Pectin, Masseter Muscle, Incisor
Document Summary
In extreme heat many plants reduce leaf surface area by curing up. Dragonflies reduce their surface area in contact with the sun light: they point their abdomen part in the air which casts shadows on the rest of their body, this position is called obelisk. Tiger beetles have to walk on sand which can become very hot so they stand higher up so their body is cooler: this is called stilting. Dragon flies pump more liquid to their abdomen to lose more body heat. Ducks have that net of blood vessels in their upper foot: when it"s hot they pump blood down their feet to lose more heat, net is called rete mirabile. Beavers have large tails with a net as well: so they send bore blood to the tail to lose heat, 90% more heat can be lost when the net is bypassed.
