The cognitive revolution: (shift in how the study of the mind is approached) Reaction to behavioural approach to the mind. Recap: skinner vs. chomsky on language acquisition. Skinner says: linguistic community gives meaning to words (sounds) with rewards/punishment (corrected, looks, etc, negative results) Chomsky says: need to talk about observable behaviours (when kids learn a language they learn rules, its not just reinforcement in the way behaviourists suggest) Chomsky says: can"t be just reacting/processing about the information they"re shown because the words there presented with are way less sophisticated than the amount of rules they learn. There isn"t enough data available to test it. Innate language faculty, part of our biological makeup (special area of the mind devoted to grammar (nativist view by chomsky on language acquisition) Can"t directly observe through behaviour (failure of behaviourism) The mind body problem approach to cog. sci. Starting point of the mind body problem : dualism. Has a long history in western philosophy.
