CGSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Pascal Boyer, Group Selection, Schizotypal Personality Disorder
Document Summary
Pascal boyer - counterontology theory: humans have natural categories to understand things, gods = any being with supernatural powers (have to be in 2 or more categories ) Justin barret: one violation concepts make a plausible god. Person permanence: belief in an afterlife - people will exist after we can no longer perceive them, minds still exist and we attribute mental states to the dead. Is it learned or innate: learned = enculturation, opposite when attributing mental states to the dead, kindergarteners more likely to do this then older children. Suggests that we are dualists (thinks that there are 2 different fundamental things - idea that mind is different from the body) Old brain and new brain: old brain is intuitive - we are conscious of its outputs. Implicit reasoning about supernatural can be at odds with what they say they believe.
