Language: a form of communication (spoken, written or signed) that is based on a system of symbols. People in the past didn"t count asl as an actual language. Symbols: a representation that stands for another representation ( how linguistics spells cat = /kaet/ Productive- language has to be filtered through cognitive systems: universal linguistics there are certain things all languages have to have, universal grammar ug- making generalizations for languages. Components of language: (sentences, phrases, words, morpheme and phoneme) Sentences: are the primary unites used to convey information because they combine information about the meaning of individual words + the meaning of finish. Words and morphemes- words are associated with meaning, pronunciation and parts of speech. Phonemes- smallest unit of sound that can change the meaning of the word: example bat verses pat, difference defines a phoneme contrast, english contains 40 phonemes 10 vowels and 30 consonants.
