Crim week 11 critical criminologies november 19th, 2015. Embodiment of the values of the dominant/powerful groups. Looks at the ways in which laws are used practically a lot of repression of small theft, but not of white collar crime. Promotes a critique that true punishment will produce justice. Crime is not a form of deviance; it is only abnormal in the eyes of law. So we need to look at how law distinguishes between what is acceptable & unacceptable. Focused on more cultural differences, (italians making wine at home, even in the context of alcohol prohibition) Criminalization can be a strategy to prevent particular groups . Insist on replacing the activities of crime control/punishment within wider strategies of rule. Trying to locate criminalization & punishment within a wider dimension (class) They do not advocate for reform; they advocate for class extinction. (the law will never be equal for everyone, so long there is class distinction)
