Document Summary
Discipline of verification- we have standards and a method to verify our information before it is shared. The world outside and the pictures in our heads- we create a picture of events. The pseudo-environment - newspaper makes this picture in our heads, a pseudo-environment about the world. News brings you bits and pieces that become our world and tell us what is going on. Real environment too big, complex, fleeting for direct experience. Media bring us the world outside our direct experience. People chained inside cave see only shadows from fire behind. For them, shadows are real, their world, because it is all they"ve ever seen. It is like the news media- it may not be entire truth, but to people who consume it, it"s real because it"s all they"ve got. Weight on journalists to get it right so snapshot of truth is real. Storytelling with purpose- not conventional storytelling, but value to looking at journalists as storytellers.
