Premise 1: fair opportunity shares are a requirement of justice. Premise 2: good health is required for fair shares of opportunity. Premise 3: universal health care is essential to securing good health. Conclusion: universal health care is a requirement of justice. Premises 1 & 2: justice requires that each individual enjoy as fair a share of opportunity as anyone else. Premise 3: daniel argues that universal health care is the only socially controllable factor that makes a causal contribution to health. This is false! (more sleep, better food, amount of money made, etc) Health helps, but it is not the only factor. Social determinants of health: also socially controllable, and have larger effect on distribution of health status across society, eg. whitehall study. Whitehall study: socioeconomic status of british civil servants determined their mortality. Each was government employee, lived in london, had nhs, but ones with low pay/status died younger.
