Document Summary

Raphael lemkin, genocide, holocaust, shoah, shylock, scapegoat, pogrom, court jews, Righteous amongst nations, interahamwe, uburetwa, ubuhake, arusha accord, panga. Genocide: the intent to destroy in whole or in part, a racial, ethnic or religious group. What was excluded: class, gender, sexual orientation and political affiliations. Special position granted to jewish officials during the period of 1648-1789. Acted as intermediaries; jewish international capital markets and state. During napoleonic era jewish special liberties and taxes both abolished as jews were granted citizenship or emancipation. As jews secularize and assimilate, leads to a golden era in german art, science and literature. Lost the protection of court jews from state. Resentiment, envy against those more successful than you. Target and scapegoat for dying classes: nazis the petit bourgeoisie and the lumpenproletariat on the march. Sartre: at the root of all anti-semitism lies anti-rationalism, a desire to surrender reason to passion. Everything is evidence for the cause, facts logic are irrelevant.
