27 views4 pages

Document Summary

The available treatment was risky > used infusions of toxic metals > had fatal side effects. Researchers wanted to study the long term effects of untreated syphilis on the men"s health. Men were not informed they had syphilis; told they had bad blood. Were told they are being treated, even though they were not. When new cure to treat syphilis (penicillin) was found, researchers didn"t tell participants. Three ethical concerns with this study: the men were not treated respectfully. Researchers lied to men, withheld info (i. e. cure is found). After men died, families were offered money so researchers can study their autopsy. Men were not told about treatment, men went through painful & dangerous tests. Even though syphilis can affect anyone, all men in the study were poor & african american: the men in the study were harmed, the study targeted a disadvantaged social group. There are two participants: the teacher (participants) & the learner (actor playing a role)
