The neuron doctrine: by 1888 ramon y cajal had reported that the cns in birds was not continuous but consisted of individual cells (later to be called neurons"). The following 1906 ink drawing was created by cajal while inspecting a microscope slide of a golgi-stained section of the chick cerebellum. Such revolutionary staining, which is still in use nowadays and is named after him; golgi staining. Golgi staining/golgi impregnation: impregnates a limited number of neurons at random (for reasons that are still mysterious), and permitted for the first time a clear visualization of a nerve cell body with all its processes in its entirety. Electronic communication technology is adapted for studying the electrical activity of the ns. Electrical properties of individual neurons are studied: resting potential and action potentials discovered. Electrical and chemical properties of individual neurons and sub- populations are studied.
