Week 7 Notes:
Humanistic Tradition
- Carl Rogers
Main Ideas:
- Opposite of psychoanalysis
- Emphasis on personal responsibility
- Everyone can, with proper guidance, reach their full potential
- Self-actualization, growth, positivity
- Creating a meaningful life
- Humanists believe that people are good
- the main need is to grow
Client-Centred Therapy
Three features:
1. Congruence
People get an idea of how they fit into the world (their interactions, values)
People develop a self-concept
They also develop an ideal self, the actual self is congruent with the ideal self
2. Unconditional Positive Regard
Children grow up learning what is right and wrong from parents, the child learns that
doing certain actions will cause parents to love or not love them
Unconditional Positive regard is loving the child despite their mistakes, so the child can
separate behaviours from affection
3. Empathy
Means you are connected to someone, you are not isolated, there is a relatedness
Person Centred Therapy
Two tendencies:
- Formative Tendency: the tendency we have has humans to change
- Actualizing Tendency:
- There needs to be a balance between the two, a balance between maintaining and
changing ourselves

- As we age, our formative tendency lessens
The Self
- Discrepancy between the ideal and actual self causes anxiety
- The ideal self has positive attributes
Roger’s Contributions
Fully Functioning Person:
- To move towards self-actualization all we need is that we need to feel loved and
accepted
Unconditional Positive Regard
- Many parents put conditions of worth on their children
This results in the child growing up and constantly trying to please others- this leads
to anxiety and depression
Incongruence
- There is incongruence when who we are is very different from who we want to be
- Vulnerability: unaware of the discrepancy between who you are and who you want
to be
- Anxiety: a messenger, telling you that something is imbalanced
- The first step to psychological help is being aware of the imbalance
- Defensiveness: distorting the experience to protect your values
Example: people stay in relationships where their partner cheats on them because
they distort the experience
- Disorganization: when defences fail
Client Centred Therapy:
Three Conditions
1. The therapist must be present and caring
2. The client has to feel comfortable enough to share their mistakes
3. Empathy: the cornerstone of therapeutic success
Existential Psychology
- The purpose is to help people make sense of their existence
