End of lecture 3: attenuation theory (treisman, 1964) Since broadbent wasn"t quite right, this model came about. Filter we have: is not all-or-none. If you hear house, you recognize the word once you"ve reached the threshold (made aware to you/available to you) then goes back to resting level. The threshold for your name is much lower than the house, because it"s a significant word for you. An attended channel will be activated more quickly. Thresholds are determined by amount of exposure and personal significance. Pattern recognition: involves processing of features, both bottom-up and top-down.
