PSYC 3604 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Specific Phobia, Defecation, Panic Attack
Document Summary
A lot of characteristics of mental illness are manifestations of normal responses that go to the extreme. Anxiety and depression very common to be comorbid (60% of people who have one will have the other too) Fear response to real or perceived threat (could be thus objective or subjective) Anxiety is anticipation of this future threat. It"s in the future and you think about that and you feel the fear. Can be too intense or persist long after the cessation of the real/perceived danger. In assessment you need it to last for at least 6 months. As a clinician you get to make the decision whether the anxiety is warranted and whether it lasts more than it should. It"s the largest mental health problem in canada. Panic attack is not a disorder, is a distinct period with a rapid onset of panic symptom. It doesn"t get diagnosed separately, but it becomes a factor of other diagnoses.
