Emergency medical response: how firefighters got involved in social welfare. Fire fighters are the first to respond to a scene because there are typically more fire halls around. This is because fires burn very fast and also for insurance purposes (the further you live from a fire hall, the more you pay for home insurance). Fire fighters have some medical knowledge and they typically stick around after the paramedics get there because they do a lot of the lifting and carrying because 2 paramedics is not usually enough. Ethnographies in seven cities and two small municipalities across 4 provinces since 2007-2008. Analysis of service statistics from 5 cities from 1998-2016. Analysis of factors influencing increases in 911 calls. There was a spike in the number of 911 calls increased in the 1990s. This is because we saw our hospitals become acute (they decided who stayed in the hospital and who stayed home more people stayed home).
