Wide spectrum of mental & physical abilities w/ this condition not a disease; congenital defect. Caused by trauma/damage to the developing brain usually before, during, or after birth. Mild to moderate affects body movement, muscle coordination. Abuse & violent behavior is not a personal or private matter. It is society"s responsibility to end this cycle of crime inflicted on the disabled. Barrier: anything that prevents a person with a disability from fully participating in all aspects of society because of his/her disability. Personal barriers experienced by women with disabilities to disclose. Lack of knowledge of severity of increased risk of abuse. Fear of challenging the actions of able-bodied people who assume positions of authority & control. Are not heard or listened to so they feel they do not have a voice. Lack of availability of care providers (i. e. personal assistant services) Lack of understanding & awareness of violence among police, medical services occurring among disabled women.
