The feminist classroom as a site of resistance to backlash. A strong, aggressive or violent reaction or challenges to social changes that seek to redress the established power relations, to maintain the status quo and reinforce unearned privileges. Backlash is often provoked by fear and/or prejudice. It co-opts public opinion, particularly through the media, by using skewed versions of arguments made by reformers and then claiming that the reformers" arguments are actually supportive of the status quo. It operates in a climate in which victim-blaming, scapegoating, and pathologizing dominate. Everybody wants change as long as everything stays the same. desmond.
