BST1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Krypto, Stimming, Reinforcement
Document Summary
2 functions of behaviour: to obtain something desirable (positive reinforcement, avoid something undesirable (negative reinforcement) Consequences can be socially or externally mediated or internal or private events. 3 term contingency: antecedent - behaviour - consequence = function. Functions of behaviour (attention, escape, tangible, automatic: socially mediated positive reinforcement (attention, access to tangibles) Behaving to obtain something from another person: socially mediated negative reinforcement (escape) Behaving to have another person remove something from the environment. Past experience of engaging in the behaviour has led to the delay or complete removal of a situation/demand: automatic positive reinforcement (stimming) Behaving to obtain something (pleasurable physiological sense) from oneself: automatic negative reinforcement. Behaving to remove something (aversive physiological sense) by oneself. Topography vs. function: a single topography could have 4 di erent functions. Understanding the function of problem behaviours is essential to develop and implement the most e ective and ethical intervention.
