Document Summary

Arousal; physiological and psychological activation, varying in intensity along a continuum. Anxiety; negative emotional state with feelings of worry, nervousness and apprehension associated with activation or arousal of the body. Athletes have zone of optimal state anxiety, when performance occurs; optimal state anxiety does not always occur at midpoint of continuum; emotions matter. Athletes who don"t effectively cope with stress may have decreases in performance & mental & physical distress. Athletes need to regulate arousal to stay focussed and/or in control, channel for performance; helps with mental health. Compared to non-elite athletes, elite athletes see anxiety as facilitative & positive; perception matters; strategies to cope. Increase awareness of psychological states before you can control thoughts and feelings. Think of best performance (then a worst) Checklist of performance states (p. 274) for each. Keep track of performances; use the checklist. Once aware of optimal arousal"; use arousal regulation (reduction, maintenance, induction) to help control. How we cope with anxiety is important.
