In the united states, almost all children attend school, although increasing numbers of parents choose to home school their children. School attendance is required well into adolescence, and many people continue attending institutions of formal education in their twenties. Most people who are in school/college attend classes, but a small and growing number make some use of. Distance education. about 20% of these people are in programs entirely without on-campus participation, and women above college-age are particularly likely to pursue this. The formal authority of schools is significant, ranging from the right to regulate students" dress, grooming, and comportment to the ability to require or forbid the study of particular materials. As long as the larger organizations of which we are a part do not change their basic rules of gendering, micro- social redefinitions of the place of gender will not matter.
