Renaissance writers/artists believed the classical style was destroyed due to barbarian invaders and idolatry. Europe needed to restore the relationship between art and nature. Renaissance writers/thinkers saw themselves as different/special and having more in common with the style/content of the classical age of rome rather than a "middle age". Popular ideas of the renaissance included: return to a classical style (latin), naturalism in art. Importance of vernacular: the renaissance defined itself by distinguishing itself from the past. The middle ages were focused on the creation and understanding god"s ways and plans for mankind. It was spread out amongst the bible and its events, the creation, the incarnation, and the faith being spread. Scholars of the renaissance wanted to return to: disciplines of archaeology, numismatics, philology, textual edits.
