Institution and schism: decline of the papacy. From the papacy"s high point under innocent iii in the early 13th century, the sway of the papacy declined when the 14th century came. Pope boniface viii tried to preserve his influence in vain against the king of france and the hre: boniface viii. Dante alighiere placed him in one of the circles of the inferno even though boniface viii was alive at the time: boniface"s decrees. Like unam sanctam (1302) aimed to position papal authority above secular power once and for all. Ultimately they succeeded in only angering kings and emperors: his downfall. After a failed attempt to play the hre against the french, boniface faced an ignominious downfall and ultimately his death. King philip iv the fair of france sent troops to take rome and seize the pope who later died as a consequence: his death.
