There were major families involved in italian politics. The borgias were not the only family involved in the politics of church, city, kingdom, and empire: ending the schism. They were a powerful italian family who had wielded much influence during the avignon papacy. They were the ones who had helped sponsor petrarch and get him access to not yet colonna, still french popes: colonna background.
