He was fighting in the service of the hre against his own king. He was motivated by a desire to return to a decentralized, feudal rule: the duke and rome. It was not his goal to attack rome directly. When he could not pay for his own troops, he was forced to march south. His own mostly german speaking troops were now the ones in charge: clement vii. The 1527 violent sack of rome by renegade imperial forces occurred during his reign. Clement was also getting in the way of the english king henry viii"s well laid plans to annul his marriage. In 1529, clement rejected henry viii"s petition to have his marriage to catherine of aragon annulled: english reformation. By a complex series of political and theological reforms that followed, henry moved towards. Clement excommunicated the king of england in 1533: clement vii as renaissance pope. We reach the heights of the renaissance papacy.
