Concurrently with the act of supremacy came the act of succession. This was guaranteeing the children of henry and anne would count as proper heirs. Henry was very close to achieving his ends. England was divided by the means: reformers vs papists. Reformers like cranmer and cromwell were mostly thrilled with the act of succession. A younger generation of papists stood up against henry viii"s act: more and fisher. The two most prominent opponents were the humanists thomas more and the bishop john. More also happened to be serving as chancellor under henry viii. That made for an awkward situation: thomas more. For years more had been working to bring henry back into total communion with the papacy and the hre. Along the way he had been very open to the idea of persecuting reformers. They went beyond henry"s comfort zone: more"s legacy.
