HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 76: Philip Melanchthon, Nicole Oresme, Calvinism
Document Summary
He was also the one who drew up in an astrological chart for christ"s nativity to show that jesus was born with a perfectly balanced character. This stood against the previous french work of nicole oresme. He argued that free will mitigated astral determinism: astral and divine determinisms. Astrological determinism would still be on the table in the early 16th century. Like bradwardine had done, many christian thinkers still sought to clarify the relations between astral determinism and divine determinism of providence: reformation-era astrology. Later in the 16th century, melanchthon emerged as the most pro astrological of the reformers. In his view, the determinism of providence and predestination did go hand in hand with the stars. This didn"t mean they were the same: astrological reactions. The calvinists tended to attack the lutherans as astrologers. They could draw upon augustine"s anti-astrology when doing so. The catholics for their part also took a turn against astrology.
