HIST-308 Lecture 24: Joan of Arc
Document Summary
In 1428, a french peasant girl heard a divine call to aid armagnac. She rallied the french to victory after victory. In 1431 she was captured by the burgundian and english allies. She"s an example of how mystics and visionaries had political authority. She made this clear when speaking in her own defense. She was on trial held by the burgundians. As a mystic, she is most reminiscent of hildegard of bingen"s visionary style. She spoke to the truth as she saw it. Unconvinced, the english and the burgundians had her burnt at the stake. They legitimated her true mystical authority: armagnac ascent. Her inspiration was combined with the skillful leadership of charles vii. They signed the treaty of arras with the house of valois. England had to fight against both burgundy and armagnac. England was allowed to hold onto normandy, aquitaine, etc. Charles vii continued to build up his army for a new invasion.
