He rose to prominence during italy"s renaissance: the colonial era was exporting the renaissance. Dante, petrarch and boccaccio helped the renewal of italian culture in the 14th century. They were lauded by the wealthy oligarchs of italy"s communes. The rebirth of culture was partially rooted in a new economic situation. Reorganization of the economy around banking, insurance, etc. Led to a decline in christian worries over usury. Usurious bankers like the medici seized hold of power in florence. Happy to spend money on new humanist poets, thinkers, and educators: humanism. Properly emerges in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Dante and petrarch are too early to be proper humanists. Renaissance humanists sought out essential, not just historical, meaning in classical texts.
