In 1492, the catholic monarchs of spain saw the conquest of granada. Consolidation of spanish and portuguese power over the peninsula didn"t lead to any renewal of convivencia. France sought to expel their own jewish population in the 12th century. In 1492, a genoan sailor crossed the atlantic ocean in the name of the spanish monarchs. The age of exploration and colonial violence had begun. The people of the north and south america and the entire globe had to deal with latin christian culture. The spain that columbus came from was a medieval place. The writings of columbus suggest he saw his mission as theologically loaded. The ships that carried columbus across borrowed heavily from designs in the islamic world. This didn"t change the fact that regimes the european powers would set up across the americas privileged christianity above all.
