Self Esteem.
▪ Self Esteem: Your self evaluation.
Subjective, not objective.
No one else determines your self esteem.
Culture can suggest what you should value.
▪ Sociometer Theory: We evolved as a social species.
We don't just "like" belonging, we need to belong to survive.
Low SE: Sign we need to change something or face rejection.
▪ Low Self Esteem: A bad thing.
Associated with depression, suicidality, hopelessness, attachment problems in romantic
relationship, academic problems, etc.
▪ High Self Esteem: Associated with life satisfaction, more confident with others, less
anxiety, etc.
▪ Self Serving Biases: Self esteem is important to us.
We're motivated to be viewed postively by others.
It feels good to think highly of ourselves.
Even when it's not necessarily warranted.
▪ Self Presentation: How you shape or control the way you're viewed by others.
▪ Self Monitoring: People low in self monitoring are brash, uncouth, rude, etc.
People high in it are for example salespersons, politicians, etc.
▪ Self Serving Biases: Tendency to see oneself favourably.
We can be aware or unaware.
We selectively choose dimentions we know we'll look good on.
