English 3700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Frank Gehry, Postmodern Architecture, Brutalist Architecture
Document Summary
Tradition . cannot be inherited, and if you want it you must obtain it by great labour. Difficulty has to take place in context, however. However, this difficulty revolves around two issues; having a ridiculously huge and extensive knowledge of literature and culture, all the way to the greeks. Secondly, the other issue is that is excludes a lot of people. The exclusive sense of art and culture is classist, sexist, and in the modern era, is economically exclusionary as well. Simplifying to the extreme i define postmodern as incredulity towards metanarratives. This incredulity is undoubtably a product of progress in the sciences: but that progress in turn presupposes it . the narrative function is losing its functors, its great hero, its great dangers . This challenge towards metanarraitves unites the literature in this course to some extent. It does not reject; there is a difference between incredulity and rejection. In rejecting metanarratives, you are subject to the metanarrative.
