Gender- nonbiological, culturally and socially produced distinctions between men and women and between masculinity and femininity. Gender socialization- specific messages concerned with the nature of being a man or woman in a specific group or society; begins at birth. Gender roles- expected attitudes, behavior, and activities that are socially defined as appropriate for men and women learned through the process of socialization. Gender stereotypes- oversimplified ideas about the attitudes, behaviors, and aspirations of men and women that are routinely used in everyday life. Breadwinner ideology: division between breadwinner (man) and household responsibility (woman), notion that we should have separate spheres for men (public sphere, paid work) and women (domestic sphere, looking after family) Persistent differences in pay, conditions of work, and types of work between mens and womens employment: primary labour market- large corporations, unionized industries, and government agencies. Pink collar ghetto (secondary)- womens work, restricted job mobility (involuntary part time) Gender wage gap varies by marital status, education, age.
