Document Summary

Notes upon professor stephen dumas lecture (mwf 2:00-2:50) & the 8th edition of new society by robert j. brym. Suicide appears, in society"s eyes, an anti-social and non-social act. Being condemned by society, suicide is a private committed act of taking over an individual"s life. When we learn such news, we are more likely focused on the individual"s state of mind of why?" rather than the on the state of society. We are more interested in the events of why, when, how, and what made them become depressed, upset, or angry enough to do such heinous act. In sociology, we can uncover and reveal the hidden social causes of such apparent anti/non-social act. Just like in the beginning, sociology is answering or determining the answers of why this, why that, how does this, what causes this, etc. Emile durkheim, french sociologist, had lost a friend to suicide and wanted to explore the idea of why people commit suicide.
