In 1997, reena virk, a troubled teen from a strict indo canadian family , stood 5" 8" tall and weighed close to 200 pounds. She was attacked by several teens under a bridge in victoria, bc. After escaping the first attack, eight teens (one male) beat her and drowned her. One girl accused her of trying to steal a boyfriend and extinguished a cigarette on her forehead. It was believed by many that her race , or visible minority status played a role in her death. For example, hitler blames jews (blamed for failures for. Germany and failures that he made himself) , marc lepine blamed women. Prejudice and discrimination are passed down from generation to generation. Prejudice and discrimination are socialized into children. Originating in func6onalism, normative theory suggests that people are exposed to group norms. Prejudice is thought of as the result of group socialization. Consequently, those exposed to prejudice will exhibit discriminatory behaviour.
