One of the first attempts to measure people"s attitudes towards the environment was dunlap and van liere"s (1978) new environmental paradigm (nep). They found moderate support for the emerging environmental paradigm. **the broadening-base hypothesis predicts that environmental concerns will eventually diffuse throughout society while the economic- contingency hypothesis claims that concern is contingent upon economic conditions. People will do a certain amount (small things) but they wont make profound changes to their lives. Environmental attitudes ii: most studies have failed to find a link between pro-environmental attitudes and environmentally friendly behaviour. Many people simply pay lip-service to these issues. The perfect city: the love canal disaster. Two schools were built on top of this toxic waste site. A blizzard in 1977 made residents aware of the dump. Sludge began to emerge in playgrounds and people"s basements started to smell. Hubbert (1903 1989)was a geoscientist who worked for shell.
