Tas don"t want you to know you can rely on the methods. Definitions of culture: the stuff the comes into being by our capacity to create meaning. We are the source of culture, but we don"t control the effects of it. Examples of ethnocentrism (comes from individuals of the way the film is) Tourists see sacred objects as trophies and trinkets. Anthropologist are there for a purpose of important discovery while tourists are there and then they leave. Tonight"s lecture topic: what anthropologists do and how they do it? (methods) Work that we do in the field. Work that"s done to answer a question. Learning what the locals know, what goes on, how everyone knows how to behave. Spending time in situations, not knowing how things work, but you act like you do. Lives in and studies a culture over the long term. Long term: 1 year, 50+ years, months. Depends on the kind of research you are doing.
