Tyler - religion is simply a belief in spirits. Set of attitudes, beliefs, practices, related to the supernatural. Hedican - beliefs and patterns (actions) used to deal with important problems. Supernatural - is there always a distinction between nature and super-nature. 1. animism (savagery) - minimal definition of religion - living things have a spirit - foraging societies, horticulturists, pastoralists - sleep vs death - >in the heavens and on earth you see social difference. Swanson - found in places with at least social divisions. These three types evolve in one an other. Swanson - cultures create systems of spirits and gods that mirror life on earth. Functionalism - institutions within a society or a culture helps keep its people bonded. Within a cultural context, the stories of religion are often or usually assumed to be true. Valid in a specific religious context purpose- basis for beliefs and practices - systems of ideas and knowledge - behaviours.
