The peripheral nervous system: somatic and autonomic nervous systems. Integrates/coordinates input and output (also thoughts, emotions, memories, ect. ) Stepping on a tack with your right foot. The first response is a reflex right leg flexes to pull back left leg extends to maintain balance. The second response is that the brain recognizes the pain from the tack. People can train themselves to override pain (to some extent) The 5 major cell types of the adult human cns: neurons, oligodendrocytes (cns) and schwann cells (pns, astrocytes, microglia, ependymal cells. 2-5 are sometimes classified together as glial , or non-neuronal cells: neurons. Multiple sclerosis: destruction of myelin sheath, due to an autoimmune disorder. Myelinated: large range, 6-120 m/sec, surprisingly, pain fibers aren"t the fastest.
