Took chemicals that were present in the early earth- nitrogen, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, water and hydrogen gas- set up a contained flask set up and added energy to it, i. e. zapped it with electricity. What resulted was urea, cyanide, formaldehyde and amino acids-the building blocks of proteins and, eventually, life. They found that the building blocks for life were present in the products of the experiment. The cell is the structural unit of life. All organisms are composed of 1 or more cell types. Cells can arise only by the division of a preexisting cell. Extremely complex and organized, but made from common pieces. Activity is controlled by a genetic program. Carry out chemical reactions-enzymes which allow chemistry to happen without changing the temperature too much.
