Didn"t believe that people from two different continents were the same species. The invariability of species is the condition for order . First law: the use or disuse causes structures to enlarge or shrink. Second law: all such changes were heritable. Lamarckian evolution: continuous, gradual change of all organisms, as they became adapted to their environments. He was the first to discard concept of fixed species; he viewed species as populations of individuals showing variation. Father was a medical doctor who sent darwin to med school although he decided to drop out and join a student scientific society. His father then decided darwin should be a clergyman so he sent him to university where he met prof. henslow became interested in natural history. Prof henslow nominated darwin to be the naturalist to undertake a voyage. Mocking-thrushes and tortoises were morphologically distinctive on each island.
