What is an institution: has a lot of meaning behind it, examples: The north american family is close to becoming a domestic institution: balance of power with members of family and power other social institution has over these members. Wednesday, april 4, 2018: the family institution is bigger than the sum of it"s parts, dual incomes becoming important, push to make better allowances for paternity leave. Work and gender: virtually every society has a gendered division of labour. The valuation of work is an artifact of culture. Primary breadwinner: person who earns more, secondary usually takes on more domestic chores or gives up on being breadwinner to focus on domestic activities, quantity of work contributed. Women contribute 52% of work done in the world. Work, gender, and the family: women have increased in the labour force. 63% in 2008: living in post-industrial society, increase in opportunities for women. Service sector: sales, manufacturions, waitressing, elemantry school teacher.
