Turn of the 20th century: two broad tensions: poor racial relations & socio economic class war. Racial relations: america was operating under a group of laws called the jim crow laws. Had been working under this for 40 years. It was the segregation of white and black. The effect was to disenfranchise people of all colour: drinking fountains for black and white people. Americans solution to the racial conflict/ was part of the civil war: jim crow, was a character in black menstrual shows. Jim crow was foolish, lazy, sexual promiscuous, occasionally cunning, not intelligent = what a lot of white people thought about black people. Jim crow was a very insulting character, and the laws were named after her: no way laws were not equal for 40 years.
