PHIL 1010 Lecture 4: Lecture 4 - phil sept 21
Document Summary
Week three - phil*1010 introduction to philosophy september 21st. Reading the state of nature locke. While hobbes identified the state of nature with a state of war, locke emphasizes that this is a mistake. Locke supposed it would be possible to live a life without a government. No one has the right to rule in a sense that no one has been appointed to by god. Locke states, first the state of nature is a state of perfect freedom, second it is a state of equality (moral claim about rights) and third it is the bound by a law of nature. Locke"s law has a theological aspect no one ought to harm another in life, health, liberty, possessions because we have no superiors on earth, we have one in heaven. The state of nature is enforceable private property: ex: god put us on this earth so it would be absurd if he made us starve here.
