Canada asserted control over aboriginal land (either occupied or seized) Aboriginal women over this time were disempowered who held a significant influence. Canada denied many rights to this culture politically, economically and socially. Canadians sent aboriginal children away from their parents to residential schools: this was done to break their link to their culture and identity. Residential schools for these children were lonely and alienated. The buildings were poorly located, built and maintained.
