Plato"s republic is the most influential for western society for understanding of society, beauty, etc. Metaphysical account before plato: building blocks of reality are water, fire, earth and air. Socrates and plato argued that reality could not be anything particular, but must be in what all particulates share, their essence. Reality is the form of a thing (e. g. the form of chairness that gives the reality to a chair) The world of experience or appearance: temporal, particular, contingent, and ever-changing. The real world or the intelligible world: eternal, universal, necessary, and ever-lasting. Forms are hierarchically organized with the form of good on top. Response: look at it in a larger context so they can understand justice. As for auxiliaries, socrates insists that if the auxiliaries are to do their job well they should be under strict prohibition of owning private property and making money. Instead the city should provide from them by way of taxation for modest salary (41b)
