Document Summary

Randomized trial are ideal design to evaluate effectiveness & side effects of new forms of intervention: how epidemiologists investigate whether one intervention is better, or more efficacious. Often refer to these types of studies as randomized clinical trials (rct), they do not in fact have to take place in a clinical setting: eg: community-based trials. It is more accurate to refer to these studies as randomized trials. Randomized trials can be used for many purposes: evaluating new drugs and other treatments of disease. Including tests of new health and medical care technology. Prophylactic (preventive) studies that assess efficacy of vaccines or feed additives. Therapeutic studies assessing efficacy of antibiotics or anti-cancer drugs: assess new programs for screening and early detection, new ways of organizing and delivering health services. Begin with a defined population that is randomized to receive either new or current treatment.
